BOTOX 101
by Andrew Berman, MD, MPH
What is Botox?
Botox is the trade name for a combination of human albumin and sodium
chloride, without a preservative, which is freeze dried and reconstituted
with sterile saline.
How does Botox Work?
Botox binds with motor nervers to inhibit the release of Acetylcholine.
This produces a temporary and reversible paralysis of the muscle into
which it is injected. Botox takes very little time to administer and within
a few days, the muscle gently relaxes, smoothing out the skin and softening
the lines. The end result is a relaxed and rested appearance.
Will Botox erase my crows feet?
While Botox will not "erase" crows feet, it will reduce the
appearance of crows feet around the eyes, forehead wrinkles, and glabella
frown lines (the area between the eyes.) It is also used to treat excessively
sweaty palms, feet and armpits.
Are the results permanent?
No. The effects of Botox will last 4-6 months on average, but may last
longer with continued treatment.
Are there any risks?
As with any medical treatment, a discussion of possible risks and complications
is an essential part of the consultation process. However, the risks associated
with Botox are usually temporary because of the non-permanent nature of
Botox. As a side note, Botox has been used by the medical community of
over 17 years!
Is Botox expensive?
Expense in reference to an aesthetic treatment is a personal decision.
However, most of my patients consider Botox an excellent value, considering
that for between $400-$600, my patients achieve amazing results; reduced
wrinkles, extended careers and a more youthful and rested appearance.
When can I get "botoxed?"
I administer Botox daily for $600 via appointment in my Beverly Hills
office; the second and fourth Thursday of the month are "Botox Days"
and treatment runs as low as $400. As a special to all clients and friends
of Los Angeles Skin Care, if you bring a friend and mention this article,
I will give each of you $25 off your treatment.
